Hanson sits at the geographic center of Plymouth County’s South Shore, a small town of roughly 10,500 people where cranberry bogs still line the roadsides and the Indian Head River winds through conservation land on its way to the North River. Route 27 runs north-south through town, Route 14 connects east to Pembroke and west to Bridgewater, and Route 58 heads south toward Halifax. For active adults looking at 55+ townhomes in the Hanson area, the appeal is practical: a quiet residential setting with median household incomes above $110,000, a 30-minute commute to Brockton or the Route 3 corridor, and new-construction options in neighboring towns that didn’t exist five years ago.
Hanson itself has limited new housing inventory—most of the town’s housing stock dates to the 1960s and 1970s, and zoning keeps development small-scale. But three Thorndike Development communities within a 25-minute drive give Hanson-area buyers age-qualified options ranging from dedicated age-restricted elevator buildings to multi-generational neighborhoods with first-floor primary suites.
The closest new-construction 55+ community to Hanson is Featherwinds in Halifax—one town south, about five minutes down Route 58. Featherwinds is Thorndike’s dedicated over-55 community: every home is single-level, every building has a central elevator, and there are no stairs between the parking garage and the front door. Homes range from 1,027 to 1,598 square feet with 1–2 bedrooms, priced from [price:featherwinds]. That price point makes Featherwinds the most affordable new-construction option on the South Shore for buyers over 55—and the only one with four pickleball courts, a dedicated dog park open to all breeds, and Victory Gardens for residents who want to grow their own food.
The Halifax Senior Center is under construction on Thorndike-donated land at the Featherwinds entrance, with a planned opening in fall 2026. Managed by the Halifax Council on Aging, the center will offer wellness programs, book clubs, lecture series, counseling services, and social activities—all steps from residents’ front doors rather than a drive across town.
For buyers who prefer a townhome layout or want more square footage, two Thorndike communities serve the Hanson area without age restrictions but with floor plans that work well for the over-55 buyer.
Larkwood is a 138-home townhome community set along the Taunton River, where courtyards between buildings and a canoe and kayak launch define a neighborhood that faces green space rather than parking lots. Three of the six floor plans—the Chestnut, Hickory, and Pine—put the primary suite on the main level alongside the kitchen and laundry, giving over-55 buyers one-floor daily living in a townhome format. A ground-level flex room in many plans serves as a home office, guest suite, or hobby space. Homes start at [price:larkwood] for up to 2,830 square feet with a garage, and Larkwood is less than 10 minutes to both Route 24 and I-495 for buyers who still commute part-time.
Alden’s Reach is Plymouth’s newest neighborhood, with 152 townhomes, duplexes, and single-level flats from [price:aldens-reach]. Floor plans range from roughly 1,700 to more than 2,600 square feet, and several offer the primary bedroom, kitchen, and laundry all on one level. Walking trails connect into town conservation land, and the community includes a pool, four-season poolhouse, fire pit, raised-bed gardens, and a tot lot. Thorndike built three previous Plymouth communities—Sawyer’s Reach, Summer Reach, and homes at The Pinehills—so the Alden’s Reach design reflects decades of building for South Shore buyers.
Hanson’s existing housing stock sells at a median price near $580,000, and most of it is older single-family construction on larger lots. That means higher maintenance: roof replacements, landscaping, septic system upkeep, exterior painting, and the kind of weekend project list that many over-55 buyers are trying to leave behind. The tradeoff with a 55+ condominium or townhome community is straightforward—exterior maintenance, landscaping, and snow removal are typically handled by the association, freeing time for travel, hobbies, or simply not spending Saturdays on a ladder.
At Featherwinds, for example, homes start more than $150,000 below Hanson’s median resale price. The difference buys a brand-new home with energy-efficient heating and cooling, quartz countertops, hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances, and access to a pool, poolhouse, and pickleball courts—none of which come with a 1970s ranch on a half-acre lot. Thorndike’s in-house design director, Nikkie Gaitan, works with every buyer on finish selections, so the home is personalized before move-in rather than requiring renovations after.
The South Shore between Brockton and Plymouth has become one of the more active pockets of age-restricted development in Massachusetts, and the Hanson area sits near the center of it. Within 15 minutes of Hanson center, buyers can reach Bridgewater State University lectures and events, the Country Club of Halifax for golf, Monponsett Pond for fishing and kayaking, and Myles Standish State Forest for hiking and biking. Massasoit State Park in Raynham is about 10 minutes west. Medical care is accessible through BID-Plymouth Hospital to the southeast and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital to the north.
Thorndike Development has been building active adult communities in this part of Massachusetts since the late 1990s, starting with Greatbrook in Norton—the company’s first active adult community—followed by Red Mill Village, which won Best Active Adult Community in the Nation from the National Association of Home Builders. That experience across more than 3,500 homes and 45-plus awards over 40 years shows in the design details: furniture-tested room layouts, professional cabinetry, handset tile, and a separate customer service department that handles post-move-in issues directly.
