Hanson is one of those South Shore towns that people discover almost by accident and then refuse to leave. The commuter rail station on the Plymouth/Kingston line puts South Station under an hour away, Route 14 connects to Rockland and the Route 3 corridor, and Route 58 runs south to Halifax. The town itself is roughly 16 square miles of residential neighborhoods, cranberry bogs, and conservation land around Indian Head River and Wampatuck Pond. The population sits around 11,000, and the housing stock is predominantly single-family homes on half-acre lots—attractive if that’s what you want, limiting if you’d prefer a condominium with less upkeep.
New condominium construction within Hanson’s borders is essentially nonexistent. But the town’s geography puts it within 15 to 25 minutes of three Thorndike Development communities that offer new-build condos, townhomes, and single-level flats at price points ranging from $439,000 to $679,000.
Hanson’s appeal is straightforward: it’s affordable relative to the northern South Shore towns, it has the commuter rail, and it feels rural without actually being remote. Camp Kiwanee on Wampatuck Pond is one of the few municipal summer camps left on the South Shore. The Indian Head River, which runs through town before emptying into North River near Hanover, draws kayakers and canoeists in the warmer months. And the school district—shared with Whitman in the Whitman-Hanson Regional system—is large enough to offer full athletics and AP courses without the overcrowding that affects some of the faster-growing South Shore towns.
Median home prices in Hanson have climbed past $500,000 in recent years, driven by limited inventory and steady Boston commuter demand. For buyers who want to stay in this part of the South Shore but don’t need a single-family home with a yard to maintain, condominiums in adjacent towns offer a compelling alternative—newer construction, included amenities, and significantly less weekend maintenance.
Halifax is Hanson’s neighbor to the south, and Featherwinds sits off Monponsett Street—a straight shot from Hanson center. The 102 condominiums start at [fp:featherwinds-the-breeze] for the Breeze (a one-bedroom-plus-den plan at 1,027 square feet) and range to [fp:featherwinds-the-expanded-cloud] for the Expanded Cloud (two bedrooms with a split layout for privacy between bedrooms). West-facing Wind plan homes overlook the Country Club of Halifax golf course at sunset, while east-facing Expanded Cloud homes catch morning light over the Village Green. Every home is single-level inside buildings with central elevator access—no stairs from the parking level to your front door. The community is designed for active adults 55 and older, though up to 20% of homes may be sold to buyers under 55 who are at least 18. Four pickleball courts managed by the town of Halifax, Victory Gardens, a dog park that welcomes all breeds and sizes, and a four-season poolhouse round out the amenities. The town is also building a new Halifax Senior Center at the Featherwinds entrance on Thorndike-donated land, with a fall 2026 opening.
Take Route 138 west toward Raynham and Larkwood appears along the Taunton River off Church Street—138 condominium townhomes in a community open to buyers of all ages. What separates Larkwood from most South Shore condos is the ground-level flex room built into every plan: a space below the main living level that homeowners use as a home office, guest suite, workshop, or extra bedroom. Six floor plans range from the Hickory at [fp:larkwood-the-hickory] (a true ground-level home with zero stairs and 1,671 square feet) to the Birch at $679,000 (2,830 square feet, three bedrooms, two-car garage, cathedral-ceiling primary suite). A canoe and kayak launch on the Taunton River, woodland walking trails, and Massasoit State Park about a mile south give the community an outdoor identity that Hanson buyers will recognize.
Alden’s Reach sits farther south, but Hanson buyers already drive to Plymouth for beaches, shopping at Colony Place, and waterfront dining—this just makes the trip permanent. The 152 townhomes, duplexes, and ground-level flats are multi-generational (all ages welcome) and priced from the Hickory at [fp:aldens-reach-the-hickory] to the Expanded Oak at [fp:aldens-reach-expanded-oak] with a true first-floor primary suite. Families should look at the Expanded Spruce: [fp:aldens-reach-expanded-spruce] for 2,338 square feet, three bedrooms plus den, and a basement with walk-out potential. A pool, poolhouse, tot lot, fire pit, and community gardens sit at the center, with walking trails connecting into Plymouth’s conservation land beyond the neighborhood edge.
Thorndike Development isn’t new to the Hanson area. In Norton—two towns west of Hanson—the company built Greatbrook, its first active adult community (116 homes abutting TPC Boston), and Red Mill Village, which the NAHB named Best Active Adult Community in the Nation in 2005. In Plymouth, Sawyer’s Reach (224 homes) and Summer Reach (112 homes, sold out in 16 months) preceded Alden’s Reach. Thorndike also spent a decade as a builder partner at The Pinehills, winning multiple Best in the Nation awards during that partnership. Forty-plus years, 3,500-plus homes, 45-plus national and regional awards—all from a locally owned Massachusetts firm that handles design, construction, and customer service in-house.

Yes. Both are multi-generational communities open to all ages, with tot lots, green spaces, and three-bedroom floor plans starting at $589,000.
Featherwinds is designed for active adults 55 and older, but up to 20% of homes may be sold to buyers under 55. All residents must be at least 18.
